Competition work is a different trade from servicing. Pick the discipline you need and the directory will rank workshops with published evidence of doing that work, not simply the closest garage with the most reviews.
On track
Race events, sprints and hill climbs
Cornwall and the wider South West run a full season of competition. These are the formats to look for, and the workshops in the directory that prepare cars for them.
Circuit racing
Club level race weekends, usually run outside the county with Cornish teams travelling to them. Perranporth Driving Centre gives newcomers safe circuit style seat time before they ever race.
Sprints and hill climbs
Single car timed runs. The most accessible way into competition with a road legal car.
Autotests and autosolos
Low speed, low cost, tight courses. Very little preparation needed beyond a safe car.
Stage and road rallying
Cage, sump guard, intercom and seam welding work. Ask a fabricator early.
Karting
Owner driver and arrive and drive. A common route for younger drivers into circuit racing.
Track days
Not competition, but the same brake, fluid, tyre and geometry preparation applies.
Getting started
Learner and off road driving
Most Cornish drivers start long before a race licence. Off road tuition builds car control in a safe place, and it is the same skill set that circuit racing, sprints and hill climbs later depend on.
Perranporth Driving Centre
An off road driver training facility at Perranporth, described by the centre as the only purpose built site of its kind in the UK, laid out with the features of a public road but without any traffic. Under 17s can learn from age 14, accompanied by any adult who holds a full driving licence, which makes it a practical first step for young drivers and for anyone wanting car control practice away from public roads.
Details are taken from the centre's own website. Confirm ages, prices and availability with them directly before booking.
Off track
Car meets and enthusiast gatherings
Meets are where most people find their next specialist. These are the kinds of gathering that run across Cornwall through the year.
Cars and coffee mornings
Weekend morning meets in car parks and cafes. All makes, informal, family friendly.
Marque and club nights
MX-5, classic, JDM, VAG, American and 4x4 groups running regular evening meets.
Show and shine days
Judged displays, often attached to a charity fundraiser or a town event.
Summer coastal cruises
Organised convoys along the coast finishing at a pub, beach car park or venue.
Workshop open days
Specialists opening the ramps for build walk rounds, dyno demos and technical talks.
Winter garage nights
Off season indoor meets, tech sessions and project car catch ups.
Run a meet, club night or race event?
Dates are published once an organiser confirms them with us, so nothing here is guesswork. Send us the details and we will list your event and your club on the Motoring Hub.
Add your event or clubBuilding a car rather than fixing one?
A competition build usually needs a team rather than a single workshop. A typical MX-5 track build needs a marque specialist, a fabricator, a suspension and alignment specialist, an engine tuner, a motorsport electrician, a cage specialist, a tyre supplier and a track preparation workshop. Search each discipline separately and check each workshop's published evidence before committing.
